Develops gradually over several years. Main symptoms are redness, warmth & swelling of joints, primarily affects joints of knees, hands, hips, feet & spine.

Osteoarthritis

It is a degenerative joint disease that is the most common form of joint disease in the world. It primarily affects the weight bearing joints that is the hip, knee & the ankle. In osteoarthritis, cartilage - the rubbery material that cushions joints -- becomes stiff and loses its elasticity. This makes the joint prone to damage and may lead to pain, swelling, loss of movement, and further deterioration.

Overweight or obese people are the ones most affected by osteoarthritis. The radiographic examination of the patients reveals the degeneration of cartilage & hypertrophy of the bone structures. These changes are visualised as narrowed joint space, sharpened, dense subchondral bone and joint inflammation.

Who do joints require?

A healthy cartilage requires 3 things :

§  Water for hydration, lubrication & nourishment

§  Proteglycans to attract & hold water

§  Collagen to keep Proteglycans securely in place

Proteglycans are water attracting molecules & hold water in them to lubricate & nourish the cartilage. Without these water attracting molecules, the cartilage loses its ability to absorb shock. Dried cartilage then leads to joint degeneration.

All bones in the body are connected to each other by means of cartilage. While the cartilage in the feet, ankles, knees and the backbone assist in absorbing shocks, the others assist in body movements.

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is the main building block for semi-fluids that lubricate the joints. Glucosamine is GLUCOSAMINOGLYCAN(GAG), a component of all human tissues, especially high in concentration in the cartilages.

GAG's are a long chain of amino acids that are found in high concentration in Sea Shells. It is naturally synthesized by addition of an amino group to glucose, followed by acetylation. Its main contents are glucose, glutamine & sulphur.

Glucosamine is an essential component for the body's synthesis of lubricants and shock absorbing mechanisms necessary to maintain & restore healthy joint performance.

Chondroitin

Glucosamine is often combined with Chondroitin, a molecule naturally present in cartilage. Chondroitin gives cartilage elasticity and is believed to prevent the destruction of cartilage by enzymes. Glucosamine and Chondroitin, combined are proven to act beneficially in case of osteoarthritis, because of their ability to aid the repair of cartilages and prevent further damage.
